UPDATE: Power restored to thousands on North Island

Power has been restored to over 7,000 people on North Vancouver Island who found themselves in the dark Monday morning.

The outages were between Port McNeill and Port Hardy and out to Alert Bay and Port Alice.

According to the BC Hydro outage map, the outages happened at around 7 a.m. because of transmission circuit failures.

Thousands of people are without power on the North Island because of multiple transmission circuit failures.

According to the BC Hydro outage map, around 7,200 are without power between Port McNeill and Port Hardy, and as far west as Port Alice.

The map says power has been out in the region since 7:07 a.m. Hydro adds crews are on site to work on the repairs.

There are no estimated times for when the power might come back on.

BC Ferries says passengers on the Port Hardy to Sointula ferry were unable to load and unload because of the outage.
