Alcohol and boating don’t mix, police say after Sointula marina crash

Police are reminding people that operating a boat while impaired carries the same penalties as a car, after an incident at Sointula.

A small boat with one occupant crashed into the Rough Bay Marina on Malcolm Island during the afternoon of July 14. The boat was alleged to be operating at high speeds before it hit the rocks. The vessel sank and the male operator was rescued by Canadian Coast Guard personnel. He was medically cleared before being turned over to Port McNeill RCMP.

Police found evidence of alcohol impairment and will be submitting information to the prosecution service for consideration of charges. The BC Underwater Recovery Team will assist in salvaging the small boat for further investigation.
