UPDATE: Power restored by midnight for wind-stricken North Islanders

It wasn’t a cold night on the North Island after all, BC Hydro managed to restore the power before midnight last night.

High winds knocked out the power to nearly 7,500 homes yesterday. Port Hardy, Alert Bay, Port McNeill, Port Alice and the surrounding regions were all affected. BC Hydro’s outages website says the power was knocked out just before 9am Saturday in Alert Bay, and just before 11 am elsewhere. The cause was a transmission circuit failure.

Crews travelling from outside the community weren’t able to be on site until after 6 pm, but once on the job they worked quickly. By 11 pm power had been restored for almost all affected.
