North Island in spotlight for high speed Internet upgrades

North Island communities that haven’t yet hooked up to high-speed Internet have another opportunity to get the government to pay for it.

Last year the province and federal government announced $830 million in funding for rural and remote communities to get connected to high-speed Internet. The program’s latest focus is on northern Vancouver Island and the coast, particularly Nimpkish and Quatsino. Several communities around the Broughton Archipelago are also eligible.

The goal of the Connecting Communities BC program is to ensure every household and First Nations community has access to high-speed Internet by 2027.

The latest round of funding will be available for applications starting January 8.
