Fire departments getting new breathing gear, training centre

Some rural fire departments are getting extra provincial funding to prepare for summer wildfires.

The province is providing more than $6 million in funding from the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund to help volunteer fire departments in BC.

Locally, Port Hardy’s fire department is getting $30,000 for a modular fire-training facility. Port Alice is getting the same amount for new self-contained breathing apparatus. And the village of Tahsis is getting the same for training and equipment.

Public safety minister Mike Farnworth says the province is committed to helping small fire crews in local communities by investing in training, equipment, and mental health supports to improve firefighting and care for front-line workers.
