Softball league pitches plan to name fields after late local sports advocate

Port Hardy’s slo-pitch league is hoping to get their fields renamed after a beloved community figure who passed away last summer.

Earlier this month the league asked Port Hardy council to dedicate the ball fields in Storey’s Beach Park to David Dean, calling them “David Dean’s Sports Fields.” They have offered to fundraise for the sign themselves.

Dean came to Coal Harbour in the 1950s and passed away in Port Hardy last August. He as a local sports enthusiast and supporter, and helped get the slo-pitch softball league started.

The league says they would like to dedicate the fields in a formal ceremony during this year’s Father’s Day Classic Ball tournament on June 13-16, which is named after Dean.

Council was supportive of the idea, and grateful for the league’s letter, but tossed the idea back to staff to cross-check with another request to name local sports fields to make sure no one is left out, and everything is done fairly. They are hopeful it can be done in time for the Father’s Day tournament.
