Plans for new seniors home in Port Hardy slowly moving forward

Plans for a new home for seniors in Port Hardy are slowly coming together.

The District owns property on Trustee Road that was originally eyed for a new seniors housing complex to meet the community’s growing need. However, the North Island Seniors Housing Foundation wasn’t able to secure funding.

Now, the foundation is partnering with Rotary Seniors Housing, which operates the Hardy Bay Rotary Seniors Lodge on Rupert Street. The Rupert Street property has room for another development, but requires some zoning changes.

District council received the formal request last week to make legislative changes allowing the project to go ahead. They voted in favour of a new memorandum of understanding with the society to investigate developing the site over the next few years.

Council and the society will continue to work together on the housing project.
