10 earthquakes in 24 hours recorded off Island’s West Coast

A cluster of earthquakes have been recorded off Vancouver Island’s west coast in the past 24 hours.

However, they are not expected to pose any risk to Islanders.

The largest quake so far was this morning [July 4], a 5.7 magnitude quake recorded around 230 kilometres southwest of Tofino, at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.

Since yesterday, nine other earthquakes, all larger than magnitude 4, have been recorded in the same area.

The US Tsunami Warning Centre says there is no risk of a tsunami or any damage from the quakes. However, there is a strong chance of at least one aftershock within the next week.
