The Heiltsuk Nation on the Central Coast will continue to host a Marine Emergency Response Team in its territory to help protect the ocean and mariners.
The federal government and Heiltsuk Nation renewed a Memorandum of Understanding this week, reaffirming the nation’s role in marine environmental response. The response team will be expanded, and will test methods to improve Canada’s national oil spill preparedness and response system.
The nation will work with the Coast Guard to practice spill response, and they will also practice rescue techniques on the water.
