New wing commander takes over at 19 Wing in Comox

There’s a new wing commander in charge of 19 Wing Comox, after a formal change of command ceremony Tuesday.

Col. Chris Shapka is now in charge, replacing Col. JP Gagnon, who served as commander since 2022.

Shapka has been in the Canadian Armed Forces since 1997. He previously served at 19 Wing in 2011, commanding the 19 Air Maintenance Squadron. Since then, he served as commander of the Aerospace Engineering Squadron in Borden, earning a promotion to Lt. Col.

From 2017 to 2020, he was the deputy director of combat operations at the Air Operations Centre at the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. [ka-tar]. He earned his full colonel promotion in 2020.

At Tuesday’s ceremony he thanked his wife and daughters for their support.
