NDP MP Blaney helps deliver food as part of food bank run

North Island – Powell River MP Rachel Blaney has helped deliver food in a vital food bank run with a food bank program.

On Friday, Blaney joined Neil MacDougall in delivering essential food supplies to food banks in Kyuquot, Gold River, and Tahsis for Loaves & Fishes, a food bank and recovery program that focuses on delivering food for free to those in need on Vancouver Island.

The journey started at 8:30 a.m. in Campbell River, where they first went to Kyuquot, then to Gold River, before making their last stop in Tahsis.

According to Blaney, the program delivers supplies to communities that are only served by helicopter or logging road.

“They don’t often have access to a lot of resources,” said Blaney. “When times are tough, these communities are hit hard.”

Along with delivering food, Blaney says she and MacDougall also collected returned bottles and cans, getting big bags of these items from Tahsis, Moutcha Bay Resort, and Strathcona Park by the time they came back to Campbell River at 7:30 p.m.

She says all the items will be returned for a refund, to help support the food bank’s funding.

Blaney adds it was wonderful to see communities and people come together to create solutions to support those in need, with volunteers picking up and delivering food to people who couldn’t leave their homes.
