A Vancouver Island athlete walks away with a silver medal, following the Women’s Eight Rowing finals today.
Avalon Wasteneys from Campbell River took part in the Olympic final at 1:50 a.m. after securing a spot in the finals on Thursday.
The team competed against Romania, Great Britain, Australia, United States, and Italy.

During the event, the team finished the course in 5 minutes and 58 seconds, only 4 seconds behind Romania, who won the gold, while Canada took home the silver.
As of today, Team Canada has now won 12 medals overall since the Olympics officially started on July 26.
