A North Island First Nation has more influence over land use in their territory, thanks to a new agreement with the province.
The ‘Namgis nation and BC recently agreed on the Gwa’ni Land Use Plan, which enhances the existing Vancouver Island Land Use Plan.
Victor Isaac, ‘Namgis chief councillor, says it will help achieve shared stewardship responsibilities and will also support a sustainable North Island forestry industry.
Western Forest Products president and CEO Steven Hofer welcomes the agreement, and says it will provide a clear foundation for land use. He says it will help the company work with the nation to develop a forestry plan.
It also proposes to create 1,600 hectares of new protected areas, focused on cultural, recreational, and environmental values.
