This year is the 30th anniversary of Port Hardy’s twin relationship with the Japanese town of Numata, and North Island delegates will be travelling there later this month.
Last week Port Hardy council approved helping the delegation cover the costs of increased airfare to Japan, which is up to $800 higher per person than before the COVID pandemic.
The district will help the delegates out with $500 each to cover increased travel costs.
Port Hardy and Numata have been “twinned” sister cities since 1993, with delegations visiting each other several times since. The relationship is managed by the Port Hardy Twinning Society, which raised a Japanese torii gate in Carrot Park in 2014 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the relationship.
North Island delegates will head to Numata later this month.
