A North Island First Nation will be signing an historic agreement tomorrow with the province and federal government, to take control over child and family services.
Chief Leslie Walkus and the council for the Gwa’sala-Nakwaxda’xw Nations are hosting federal Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu and BC’s Minister of Children and Family Development Grace Lore. They will be at the Port Hardy Recreation Centre at 12:30 pm, the event will also be live-streamed on Facebook.
Visit the event page for the live-stream link.
The agreement will be similar to a coordination agreement signed earlier this year by the Cowichan Tribes, which put the nation in charge of Child and Family Services for its members, rather than the province.
Around the same time, in Vancouver the First Nations Leadership Council will be making an important announcement along with the federal and provincial governments about early learning and child care for all First Nations in BC. Federal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Jenna Sudds will be in attendance.
We will share more details of both announcements once they become available.
