MP Blaney wants clawbacks to end for seniors’ benefits

The NDP MP for North Island-Powell River wants clawbacks to end for seniors’ benefits.

In the House of Commons on Monday, Rachel Blaney says after the Canada Pension Plan was raised last year, the federal government clawed back Guaranteed Income Supplement for seniors in need.

The supplement is made to give those 65 and older a monthly payment, with Blaney saying the clawback cost hundreds of dollars a year for seniors.

“This summer, I heard from seniors and their loved ones, they are drowning,” said Blaney.

She wraps up her statement by asking for the clawbacks to end.

Federal Minister of Labour and Seniors Steve MacKinnon says the income goes up quarterly, adding there are no clawbacks when the member knows they have expanded how much money seniors can make on the income.

“We’ve expanded that substantially,” said MacKinnon.
