Several climate research projects funded in Kyoquot region

The Strathcona Regional District has received more than $800,000 in funding to support six climate-friendly projects.

That includes several on the North Island. The Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’/Che:k’tles7et’h’ First Nations will get funding to do aerial surveys of their territory, so they can determine appropriate mitigation activities to protect treaty settlement lands, communities, and cultural and natural assets.

Walters Island near Kyoquotuot is also on the radar, with funding going to a condition assessment and oceanographic survey for the breakwater. The area was blasted in the 1960s to create better boat access, research will help understand its long-term impacts.

The funding will also help the district hire a regional Community Disaster Awareness Consultant, to strengthen regional emergency programs.
