Draft salmon farm transition plan promises another year of talks

A long-awaited draft transition plan for BC salmon farms is finally being reviewed by stakeholders and local governments, but it’s short on details.

The federal Liberal government has been promising since 2019 to remove conventional net pen salmon farms from BC waters by 2029, and has pledged to help affected First Nations and thousands of workers deal with the transition. However, the 20-page draft calls for another year of meetings before any concrete details can be revealed.

The plan proposes to “collaborate” with “impacted parties” in “consultations” with a final, more detailed plan to be published in 2025. It includes a list of themes and questions for discussion, and recommends multiple levels of government cooperate and collaborate on the final version.
