Canada’s ‘godfather of AI’ wins Nobel, warns against machine takeover

Canada’s latest Nobel Prize winner is warning about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence, which he helped develop.

Geoffrey Hinton with the University of Toronto won the Nobel Prize in physics this past week for his work in machine learning and artificial networks. He says he was flabbergasted by the announcement, and shortly after the award was announced, he warned the technology will lead to changes comparable to the Industrial Revolution.

However, he says the technology will eventually exceed people in terms of intellectual ability, and that it could lead to systems more intelligent than humans that eventually take control.

Hinton has been called the “godfather of AI” and famously quit Google last year to speak out about the dangers of the technology.
