With much of the coast facing a wind warning tonight, the North Island will escape the worst of it but there is a gale warning in effect for the Queen Charlotte Strait.
Southeasterly winds are blowing today, getting up to 90 kilometres per hour out on the water. They will die down a bit tonight and overnight, but they will pick up again tomorrow morning.
Mariners should check the latest forecasts and monitor the situation through Canadian Coast Guard radio or Weatherradio stations.
