An elementary school in Port McNeill might have to close next year, because of declining enrollment.
School District 85 Chair Leightan Wishart says in a letter to Port McNeill council that the school board is grappling with a significant funding shortfall next year. That means Cheslakees Elementary may close at the end of next June.
Wishart says all kindergarten students could attend Sunset Elementary next September, and Sunset would also be to accommodate other students from the closed school.

Cheslakees would still host StrongStart and child care programs. The board is scheduled to review a school closure bylaw in three separate meetings, starting on February 10.
