Crews are working to clean up a major oil spill near Zeballos this weekend.

On December 14, the province’s Environmental Emergency Branch (EEB) received a report of a diesel spill at a fish farm in the northwest part of the Island.

The spill appeared to be the result of an unsuccessful transfer operation on a floating concrete platform.

The person responsible for the spill retained a Qualified Environmental Professional to respond.

A coordination call was held on the day of the report to plan how to deal with the spill, with staff now deployed to clean up the incident.

The Strathcona Emergency Program said further updates will be made when there is more information.
