Home Depot target of class-action lawsuit over sharing email receipts with Meta

A class-action lawsuit against Home Depot over email receipts can go ahead, the BC Supreme Court ruled this week.

At the core of the issue is an advertising campaign the company tracked through Facebook between October 2018 and October 2022. Home Depot shared information from email receipts with Facebook’s parent company, Meta, including email addresses, dates and times of purchases, what was purchased, and the price.

It also tracked individual customers’ purchases over time. More than six million email addresses are involved.

The class action alleges that Home Depot violated the privacy of its customers and failed to get their consent for the collection, retention, and use of personal information.

Justice Peter Edelmann agreed, and certified the lawsuit to go ahead.
