Nanaimo District Hospital Foundation hits record breaking milestone

Another record has been broken for healthcare north of the Malahat, and the Nanaimo District Hospital Foundation (NDHF) says it’ll have a lasting impact, for those who need care.

The Winter Campaign raised over $2.1 million between Nov. 15 and Jan. 15, and with the help of over 1,640 donors the foundation says the impact will be felt in four areas of the hospital.

The funds are expected to help in the Maternity/NICU to help bring six incubators, a NICU transfer stretcher to safety transport fragile newborns, and a fetal monitor. It will also help provide a Holmium Laser to revolutionize prostate and urological cancer treatment, as well as provide two neurological tables and a pneumatic support walker for rehabilitation.

The foundation says along with the advancements, they were able to make significant progress towards imaging tools used for advanced diagnostics.

“The foundation made significant progress towards its $2.9 million fundraising goal, $650,000 has already been raised toward this life-changing equipment through the winter campaign, and donations are still being added through mail returns being received daily, now that the postal strike is over,” they say.

CEO Barney Ellis-Perry says the proof is that people all over the island step up and care about the state of healthcare and will push through any challenge in their way.

“This campaign is proof that when challenges arise, our community steps up,” he says. “The postal strike could’ve derailed us, but instead, our donors shone even brighter.

“We’ve made incredible progress, but there’s still work to be done, and to fully fund the SPECT/CT machine we need the community’s continued support.”

Anyone who contributes to the hospital before Feb. 28, will be tax deductible for the 2024 tax year.
