Port Hardy firefighters were able to keep a mobile home fire from spreading last night in Coal Harbour, with help from local volunteers.
However, Fire Chief Brent Borg says it was a long fight, taking from around 11 pm to 4 am to put it out, and the double-wide was completely destroyed. However, no people or pets were home. He said a quick response from volunteers in the Coal Harbour fire department made a big difference.
It came just one day after a house fire in Port Hardy on Carnavaron Road, which happened at around 6 pm on Tuesday. Borg says in that case they were able to contain it to one room, thanks to the quick thinking of the young man who was at home.
“He closed that door before he left, it kept that fire really small, the guys had time to get there and get their lines off,” he says. “As we were ready to make entrance to the house the window broke into the bedroom, and smoke started billowing and the fire started growing.
“They were able to knock it down right away.”
Borg says his actions helped save the home. Firefighters had the blaze out after three hours on scene.
Borg says the Carnavaron Road fire highlights how important it is for people to close doors behind them while fleeing a fire, which buys precious time for firefighters to keep house fires from spreading.
