BC Hydro customers to get more rate options as of spring

More rate options will be available to BC Hydro customers starting this spring.

Last year, BC Hydro applied to the BC Utilities Commission for more ways to help customers choose how to pay while saving on energy bills.

Hydro says after months of review; the commission has given them the greenlight to expand a flat rate for all customers.

“The current residential rate structure features two-tier pricing, with a discounted energy charge for an initial amount of energy consumed, and a higher energy charge for consumption over a certain threshold,” said Hydro in a statement.

“The new optional flat rate can provide customers with a single charge as their electricity use increases by switching to clean electricity alternatives. Customers who choose this option could see average annual savings of around $60, depending on their individual energy use.”

Along with the new rate, the Utilities Commission have also approved Hydro eliminating higher rates for Non-Integrated Areas not connected to Hydro’s electricity grid, with hopes it will lower their bills by up to $160 a year.

The changes come into effect on April 1.
