At least 50 people showed up Saturday afternoon to hold a protest outside Conservative Aaron Gunn’s campaign office in Campbell River.
The rally was organized by Stop The Vote Split North Island-Powell River, along with the North Island Network and the Qathet Anti Racist Society. They brought a busload of supporters up from Victoria Saturday morning to take part, and to go door-knocking in nearby neighbourhoods before the event.
The protest featured drummers and singers, along with comments from Darren Blaney, Homalco First Nation elected chief and husband of outgoing NDP MP Rachel Blaney.
One of the rally organizers is behind an ongoing campaign to boycott businesses in the riding who support Gunn.
Gunn was in the Comox Valley Saturday afternoon for his own rally, while NDP candidate Tanille Johnston was in Port Hardy meeting with her supporters.
Despite calls for Gunn’s removal as a candidate because of old social media posts, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has re-affirmed his support for Gunn’s candidacy.
Meanwhile Liberal candidate for North Island – Powell River Jen Lash says she, not the NDP, is the best chance to defeat the Conservatives.
“Support for the NDP is collapsing nationally and they are on track to lose official party status. The NDP are taking voter support for granted and using fear to apply pressure,” she says in a new statement provided to VISTA Radio.
