A local NDP MP wants the federal government to address multiple priorities of her riding ahead of the federal budget.
In a letter to finance minister Chrystia Freeland, North Island-Powell River MP Rachel Blaney highlights ongoing needs and priorities for the communities she serves.
This includes housing, food insecurity, the opioid crisis, and supporting local businesses.
She says for small businesses, they are still recovering from the pandemic and cost-of-living increases.
“I have heard from local businesses looking for funding opportunities to help them get back on their feet. Some have even contacted me to inform me of their desire to expand,” said Blaney.
She says food bank usage is at its highest level in the country since 1989, with food banks telling her that they are in dire need of support.
When it comes to the opioid crisis, Blaney says it has devastated countless communities.
“Campbell River just witnessed the worst year on record for toxic drug-related deaths, having the fifth-highest rate of deaths in British Columbia,” said Blaney.
For housing, Blaney says she has heard about many families moving out of her riding because of the lack of affordable homes.
Other issues affecting the communities include seniors finding stable, affordable housing, and the marriage after 60 clause.
She hopes the government can act against these issues.
