The wharf at historic Port Neville may be sold for one dollar to the Tlowitsis First Nation.
Port Neville was once the longest-running post office on the coast and was an important stop during the steamship era. The post office closed in 2010.
The Tlowitsis Nation owns 60 acres nearby, and considers the region ‘core lands for treaty settlement.’
A recent inspection of the wharf found it was generally in fair condition, and can continue servicing public access for small vessels. The inspection estimates it will cost more than $620,000 to complete all recommended repairs.
The Strathcona Regional District has enough funding from Transport Canada to cover repair costs. The board discussed the potential sale this week, which will be put out for public notification before it’s finalized.
