Wildfire Risk plan to be developed on North Vancouver Island

A plan to reduce wildfire risks will be developed on parts of Northern Vancouver Island.

In an engagement letter to Port Hardy Mayor Patricia Corbett-Labatt, the Ministry of Forests says they will make a wildland-urban interface wildfire risk reduction plan for Crown land surrounding multiple communities, including Port Hardy and Port McNeill.

Land and Resource coordinator Emily Howard says the plan is will help lower the risk of wildfires.

“The purpose of the plan is to complete a large-scale assessment of wildfire risk and the potential threat to communities and infrastructure,” said Howard.

Howard says the plan will involve assessment work from August to November this year. Staff will be mapping, reviewing info, and surveying forest types and fuels. After the assessment, the information they gather can be used to find and prioritize potential fuel management treatments.

The ministry asks the district to provide info on values or concerns on the project, with hopes of hearing back by August 1.

The letter will be presented to council for the June 11 meeting, starting at 7 p.m.
