The Living Oceans Society is working to clean up some of the North Island’s most remote beaches.
The environmental non-profit recently asked the Mount Waddington Regional District to formally support its annual Clear the Coast project. It’s funded through the provincial Clean Coast, Clean Waters Initiative Fund, and they need local government support to access the funding.
This year Living Oceans plans to remove plastic marine debris from the beaches at Cape Scott Provincial Park, Lanz and Cox Provincial Parks, and Triangle Island.
According to the society, they removed 28 bags of plastic debris from Cox Island at the beginning of July.
The clean-up project has been running for a decade, and the organization has removed more than 70 tonnes of plastic. In most years, they have been able to recycle nearly two-thirds of collected plastics, preventing it from going into the local landfill.
