For 100 years, celebrities, politicians, and even royalty have come from around the world to try and join an exclusive Vancouver Island fishing club.
The Tyee Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and was recognized by Campbell River city council last week.
The club was started in 1924 by a group of fishermen, who were inspired by the Tuna Club of Catalina Island. Since then, the lure of catching a Tyee has attracted notable visitors including John Wayne, the Marx Brothers, and even the King of Siam.
To join, anglers must use lightweight tackle to catch a Chinook of 30 pounds or more from a non-motorized boat in Campbell River’s Tyee Pool.
The club is planning anniversary celebrations leading up to its annual fishing tournament in September.
During the club’s presentation to council, club director Robin Modesto spoke about the anniversary celebrations and the club’s historical significance to the community, and thanked the city for its long-standing support. The delegation presented Council with a 100 year anniversary pin and a Tyee Club flag. Council approved flying the flag at Spirit Square during the Tyee Club’s annual fishing tournament, which runs until September 15, 2024.
