With a crucial piece of equipment only months away from failure at Port Hardy’s sewage treatment plant, council is fast-tracking its replacement.
This week council agreed to spend up to $1.2 million from reserves to replace a centrifuge at the plant. Mayor Pat Corbett-Labatt says staff and contractors have done an excellent job keeping the system operating, including a recent emergency rebuild, but new parts are now badly needed.
“This is a critical piece of infrastructure,” said Corbett-Labatt. “We need to be able to flush our toilets and for us to keep the sewer treatment facility operating at full capacity.”
Staff now have the green light to get a replacement centrifuge, which will be larger to meet future growth in the community, and they will also upgrade supporting equipment.
Money for the upgrade will come from sewer reserve funds.
