Port Hardy will be holding a local version of a fundraiser run which honours a slain Island RCMP officer and raises money for local charities.
RCMP Constable Sarah Beckett served the North Island for several years while posted to the Port McNeill detachment, before transferring south to Westshore. While on duty, she was struck and killed by an impaired driver.
Her friends, family, and colleagues started the Sarah Beckett Memorial Run in Langford, which raises money for local charities, including $40,000 last year for kids clubs and food banks.
The Port Hardy run is the same — a five-kilometre run or walk — with funds raised going to North Island charities.
The run is on Sunday, May 11 at 10 am, starting from the Port Hardy RCMP detachment, visit the official site to register as a participant.
