Homeowners are being urged to check the expiration dates on smoke detectors.
This week is Fire Prevention Week and the theme this year is aimed at raising awareness of the fact that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have expiration dates.
Firefighter Kurt MacDonald says it’s also a good time to check your winter heating system to make sure everything is good to go.

MacDonald says 10 years is usually the rule of thumb when it comes to changing out smoke detectors, but some have expiration dates that are shorter which is why it’s important to check.
